It was really a tale of two different laps for me on Sunday, I'm still not right after that second one. I went in with high expectations of at least beating my time from last year, and ended up tacking on an extra 10 minutes instead! I think the scenic detour Davey brought me on at the bottom of lap one accounts for half of that, maybe the wet for the rest? I should have know that riding in a desert for a month just before wasn't going to do me any favors when it came to handling a bike downhill in even the best Irish conditions.... Fear not for the club champs Jimmy; you guys can safely send me off with the other rookies, my bike and legs will be collecting plenty of dust and rust until then; today is day 1 of the off-season. Besides, from what I can tell it looks like one for the Enduro specialist and I'm sure will be handicapped accordingly to make sure those of us who still need training wheels finish before it gets dark.

Forgot to say to Dave O'Shea: Let us know if you hear back from Max or CI. I'd be interested in what they have to say.

I like it  :).

Patrick has quickly learned the IMBRC (Jacko) ways of sandbagging. He truly deserves a place in this club now with a schpeel like that  :D.

What is it with tall lads and sandbagging I ask  ;D

A great win from Micko ...I can't think of a more worthy champion ! and all the other finishers on what was a great course .

I'm very disappointed with how my race turned out due to lack of marshalling and clear marking. Here is complaint I sent to off road commission:

Hi Max,
I ve been racing xc over15 yrs and have never made a complaint againt a rider or a course organisers. I would like to lodge an official complaint against todays Nationals XCM race in Rostrevor.
The issue that I would like to flag is insufficient and/or unclear marking and lack of marshal at important position(s).
I was a few km from half way, racing hard, going well and thourghly enjoying the course when I came to a barrier on the right but there seemed a number of options and no marshal and no tape blocking the direction ahead- I continued straight and decended the fireroad. I soon became aware that I had been here earlier in the race but I continued...when I reached the bottom Oisin Boydell from MAD was there and a marshal, a few moments later a 3rd person again had come down the fireroad and then a fourth rider Mark Kidd. We talked to the marshal and started the climb back up. A group of about 5 were now riding down toward us and they turned and started the climb as we explained the situation..no one was happy! Then a girl was coming down and as she slowed up, to also turn and join us on the climb another racer coming down the same fireroad hit her from behind....I heard the loud bang and looked behind....while the group were attended the girl Mark and I contined the climb and alerted the next marshal of the accident....I say accident but  this was a very avoidable incident...there needed to be a marshal at that point in the race.  Speaking with yourself and Ciara after it was said that there was to have been a marshal at that point where we all went wrong. There was no marshal and nothing to stop riders continuing down the fireroad. I d like to emphasis that we did not follow each other down the fireroad but all made the same decicion based on the markings in front of us !  We turned and I climbed back up for 8 mins to get back on course but went wrong again nearer the start finish along with 2 others at which point I decided to call it a day as too much time was lost. The marking and marshaling of this course was not of a stardard suitable for a national championship race. To make matters worse I understand riders went wrong at the very same part last year. I have spoken to a number of riders after who were also unsure at the same point but either stopped to access the situation as done in orientiering races or remembered it from last year. Its Inexcusable in my option and I would like to complaint. I would ask for my sign on fee to be donated to a charity of the organisers choice.

Regards Dave
IMBRC
We had the same situation in one of this year's marathons when I was at home. It wasn't just local race , this race was in UCI calendar and attended by UCI representative. Anyway ether marking where stolen or marshal directed first leader group wrong way they ended up doing extra 15km and of course finished without podium and uci points.
UCI rep said that you have to know the course in advance and end of story.
Don't known how this will end Dave , but I assume it will be the same story.

Hi Mark,

I have said my part as I felt was my responsibility as a girl was ran into by another competitor and races were ruined as a direct result of there not being a marshal at this point... there's no point in just moaning about it and expecting change ! Similar happened last year when leading masters among others went wrong so there is a problem. The organisers said to me that there was supposed to have been a marshal at that point ! It's up to them now to find out why there was not ! My part is done !
I can't comment on the race you refer to, only the ones I have taken part in.  I love marathon racing and have competed in many races abroad including UCI marathons and they are always marked and marshalled to a very high standard but in fairness Ireland is smaller in comparison so this comparison may not always be fair.

Cheers Dave

Dave, sorry to hear about your experience in what has been a great year for you and i would have thought you would be in great form for a podium.! Its unfortunate and im sure was not meant to happen. XCM is prob the most difficult xc race to organize. We ran it on 09 and it was alot of work for the guys at the time. Having said that, organizers of any race need to ensure the guessing is removed and the rider just has to race. I wasnt there so i cant comment on the event itself, but i will say that reports of verbal abuse of marshals from some riders is disturbing and un-called for and that hopefully Hannah was ok.

In 08 (i think) myself and corney were 6th and 7th in a race on lap one and then ended up 1st and 2nd on lap 2 without passing anyone. We missed a 2km section from a crossroads that wasn't manned or marked well (tape may have been removed). Anyway thats history but i decided that any national race we run in the future would be well taped and even over taped at turns so that nobody would every have reason to take a wrong turn. It just ends your race when you go off course.

I dont think you are on facebook but you may be interested in the reply from the organizers (see below)

"Thanks everyone for their feedback both good and bad. 36km of trail where set out over 3 days using a combination of printed Orange signage, flags and marker tape, barriers and race tape as we have seen ourselves competing in XC marathon and stage races locally and abroad (we do not spray paint trees). As 60% of the course used the established main Red trail, the trail marker posts (wooden posts with marker direction disks) at all junctions these where incorporated with marker tape and signage when needed (same as last year). Even if all the marking had been removed riders can get to yellow river following the existing trail signage. At yellow river a section of barriers separated riders from the out section after the river and in section from the bog. This was clearly marked by signage and the right hand turn is clearly shown on the course map published on our site 4 weeks ago (I am attaching pictures taken the morning of the race). We naively assumed riders had experience of following trail centre signage at this stage of trail centre development in UK/IRE. We had 22 marshals plus 3 Moto riders. All our marshals are volunteers and many will not return given the abuse many of our FRIENDS received from a minority of riders on the day. I take full responsibility for the course marking on the day, if any rider has a problem they contact me directly and I will do my best to answer criticism. Rider frustration is no excuse for what marshals have told me was said on the day.

There where two RED CROSS medic stations again clearly shown on the course map (4WD @ Yellow River Crossing + standard rig at St/Fin), two of the motos are REC First Aiders carrying kit) and FA stations where detailed in the course notes (map was posted at registration btw). Four riders where treated at the St/Fin for cuts and minor bruising. Hanna was taken out by a rider who crossed the barriers after coming off Castle Bog and entered the down hill (Free Fall), was told SHE was going the wrong way (she was not btw), stopped and was hit from from behind, this was not that riders call, Hanna was down trail, on line and had priority. Marshals where informed of a 'crash' at Yellow River Bridge Crossover but given no number, I immediately went looking for the crash via Moto and found no rider, returned and continued on to feed 2 and passed no riders in obvious difficulty. I am contacting Hanna directly.

he weather was tough but that's the mountains! Our main moto marshal swept the course to follow the last rider home at just under 7hrs. So that's it, sorry for the essay but it had to be said! Tanks everyone who had a good day given the conditions and congrats to all the winners, sorry some riders thought it was a sham, this is unfair to all the team who gave up time to prep and help out, it was not run to be one! Best of luck to the next club who takes up the mantle of the fantastic XCM Champs! I'm off to ride my bike! Contact Conor Graham at SummitMTB if you need to discuss any of my post! Con"

Ya if the podium had about 10 or more steps....LOL ! aPpreciate the vote of confidence Paul , I was going well for me and really enjoying the course but I'm not at the level of the top guys in our category ...just glad to be involved and racing as hard as I could !

Ya I remember that race that Corny and yourself took a shortcut .. I mean missed a turn ....... LOL !

verbal abuse of marshals from some riders

I agree completely, sure they are there to help and when racing I typically say thanks every time I pass a marshal on course...I always figure it's the least I can do as they are standing there so I can race !  On Sunday after I washed my bike and changed I went to speak to the organisers at the tent to ask about the girl who was run into and to see why it went wrong for so many of us. I spoke with Ciara and Max. They were interested in what happened especially as someone had been hit and so I described in detail from my perspective. I then went had some grub and came back to cheer in some of the finishers !

Good to see a post from summit addressing some of the race issues even if it is on a forum I don't access ! Conor's post seems to be missing some vital info though ... ... if Hannah was the girl taken out on the same fireroad that myself and others were on (and it seems unlikely there were 2 such incidents so I'll make this assumption) she initially slowed because she saw us (about 10 in all) climbing back up the fire road and I was doing that because a marshal at the bottom of that fireroad had told me I was wrong and needed to go back up ! So as we climbed anyone coming down saw that us, slowed to ask what the craic was !  Hannah had slowed but not turned as far as I could see ....after I heard the collision I looked over my shoulder and they were in a heap on the ground. Is it possible that at this point in the race that non championship riders doing one lap (Hannah I understand was one) intersected with the championship riders who were on lap 1 of 2 but a loop ahead of some of the non championship riders ?  If so this further strengths the need for a marshal at that point ! Ciara did say to me after the race that there was supposed to be one there ....I didn't see one and neither did many of the racers who ended at the bottom of that fireroad ! This seems to me to be the issue !

I did speak with Ciara and Max on the day but would be happy to speak to Conor if he wants further clarification !

Cheers Dave
