There are a few mtb orienteering events coming up from Sept. Some of you might be interested.

Saturday 20th Slade Valley, surely we can get some more of the club up for it?
There's been 3 or more MAD at each of the last 2.

Saturday 27th is 4th and last in this league.
http://www.orienteering.ie/fixture/full?id=332 (http://www.orienteering.ie/fixture/full?id=332)
Again I'll be there, if anyone fancies trying it out I can give a few pointers.
-
I might give it a go in slade Mick, what do I need to know?
-
I could try too ? ???
-
If we dont know our way around slade, then no one will.!!

2 lengths of course (long & short), it's a staggered start and timing is electronic.
The map will have a scale, legend and other info.
Control locations are pre-printed on the map, control descriptions too.
Descriptions give you the SI box number, e.g. control 1 might be box number '101', check it matches before you punch.
It gives lots of other info too.
You must visit control locations in numerical order.
They use a stick type SI card, you insert card in SI box, it beeps and away you go to the next one.
You'll need a map board, i use a Miry (http://www.miry.cz/index.php?lang=en&view=produkty#bike) one.
Most people make their own, a clip board cable-tied to handlebars and a couple of bull-dog clips or some such thing, google mtb map boards and you'll see loads of them
Mine rotates so I can orientate the map correctly on the go, definitely a good idea.
I don't measure distances when on the bike, mentally tick off any features you pass, such as junctions, a change in vegetation, large boulders, etc. to track your location.
Compass isn't 100% necessary, it's handy for orientating map, but you won't be taking any bearings, follow line features such as roads, paths, earth banks, fences, etc.
Check out Route Gadget (http://orienteering.ie/gadget/cgi-bin/reitti.cgi?act=map&id=398&kieli=) map of Djouce event from 2 weeks ago.
Pick short or long from drop down menu on right of screen and try pick out a route you might follow.
Have a look at the legend so you might be familiar with some of the symbols.
If you get a chance try out one of the permanent courses up around Hellfire (http://www.coillteoutdoors.ie/index.php?id=159), Leadmines or Three Rock.
If you are trying these permanent courses go for a short or medium, they're designed to be done on foot and you'll probably end up carrying bike if you try a long one.
Saturday's event in Slade is designed for biking, the long will be tough enough (nav wise and bike/body wise).
Short is definitely handier, course lengths can be misleading, they're measured as the crow flies which is usually not manageable on bike.
You may end up cycling up single track and down the fire-roads, you might find yourself carrying your bike through a load of gorse, route choice is up to you.
The last two events in this league have been great, well worth trying it out, one time at least!!

Super stuff Mick, that Djouce map makes things very clear.
I'll be there Saturday

Did this event today with Mick and Davey... Not many there but great event overall and great workout too.! You are kept going.!
local knowledge helped alot which meant we didnt have to spend too much time looking at the map. They made great use of the trails and you could have been riding them in any direction.! Fair play to mick on the win today and Davey took 2nd. I was running close with the 3rd place guy until i couldnt find station 9 hiding at the bottom of stump-jumper. Lost about 13 mins (i reckon) looking for it which put me 6th. Got one guy at the end to finish in 5th overall.
Results click here (http://www.orienteering.ie/results/FullSplitsResults.php?2350)
The distance on the results is 8.3km as Mick say they measure in straight lines. I did about 17km

Very good event, made much easier with local knowledge but I still made a couple of errors that cost me a bit of time. I might try out 3 rock next week just to see how the navigation goes, The use of the trails was very impressive, alot of work went into planning the route.
-
Really enjoyed that event, i covered 14.2km, had a couple of errors too but that's all part of the game. Average of 168 bpm for the 70 mins, def a good workout. Looking forward to three rock next week.
Was great to see Davey and Paul up there, fair play!!

Great event alright.
If anybody left their helmet & gloves behind, the lads in Ajax Orienteering picked them up.
You can PM me for contact details if you need them.
